Jeremy Stöhs is an Austrian-American defense analyst at the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University and its adjunct Center for Maritime Security & Strategy. I interviewed him about his new book “The Decline of European Naval Forces.” 1:28 – Jeremy talks about where his interest in history started. His parents were his first inspiration. 3:52 – He studies the period of the 80s to the end of the Cold War. 6:50 – There is no comprehensive overview of European navies since the end of the Cold War. 9:07 – Some nations at the end of the Cold War prudently saw the end of the Soviet Union coming. But many did not. Most were focused on waging a conventional or nuclear war against a peer adversary. They were focused on controlling sea lines of communication. The US naval strategy was to put pressure on the Soviet flanks and the NATO countries followed the US lead. Sea control and sea denial and controlling SLOCs. 13:22 – Jeremy includes 11 European nations in his study. Denmark and Germany quickly shifted to out of area deployments. Britain switched from anti-submarine warfare to focusing on out of area deployments. 15:23 – Maritime traffic increased year by year after the end of the Cold War. A lot of maritime traffic has moved to Asia. Small conflicts popped up after the Cold War and European navies started deploying to areas they hadn’t been before. The Mediterranean, red Sea and the Horn of Africa. But many focused on territorial defense. 17:52 – Greece and Turkey began building similar naval forces to counter each other. 18:52 – Jeremy’s book is budgetary and platform specific. He looks at the physical make up of the navies. He also looks at men and material. Many have realized they’ve under-invested. But too many focus on the big Navy idea that the US has developed. 23:52 – Many of these navies have experienced a steep decline in their navies. However individual ships are of much higher quality than individual ships from 25 years ago. Current ships have much more battlespace awareness and are more proficient at war and other tasks. 25:37 – Through the 1990s, high intensity conflict skills atrophied, whereas low intensity conflict capabilities grew. European navies are much better at low intensity than they were 30 years ago. 27:24 – He looked at official grand strategy, military strategy, naval strategy and then naval maritime doctrine open source documents. He also used official statements about the navies. There is also a lot of secondary sources for military technology. 30:08 – The maritime research community is small and very helpful among its members. A lot of governments and citizens don’t understand the importance of maritime issues so maritime researchers feel the need to work together. 35:04 – Europeans are no longer as connected to the oceans as they used to be. But people are beginning to realize the importance of the navy again. They have more than a military role. Navies also have a constabulary role. The 2007 debt crisis hurt a lot of these navies. 39:22 – European navies are highly professional. They can really work well together especially among NATO countries. 42:26 – However Jeremy was surprised by how steep the decline was in the navies. Navy capabilities take decades to develop but the politicians haven’t thought in this time frame. Governments didn’t have the money for navies. The Dutch navy for example was slashed. Germany has decided to become more expeditionary but they can’t build the platforms they need for this. 46:52 – Jeremy will continue to focus on European naval forces. His book will become dated as soon as it is published. He wants to find out what the internal conversations were in these countries. He wants to speak with more decision makers. Some sources up to 1996 and 1998 are being declassified. 50:33 – There’s a huge focus on the US and Chinese navies but no one is studying European navies as a whole. Even landlocked countries can help with maritime security. He hopes the book will raise eyebrows in the US. He also wants to highlight his think tank in Kiel. 53:25 – It’s becoming increasingly difficult for young scholars to get books published. Jeremy feels very fortunate that the naval Institute would publish his book. 54:44 – The Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University can be found www.kielseapowerseries.com. They are in twitter as kielseapowerseries. They have a big conference every June. The intent of these broadcasts was to disrupt the morale of Allied forces listening to the broadcast. American servicemen in the Pacific often listened to the propaganda broadcasts to get a sense, by reading between the lines, of the effect of their military actions. Farther from the action, stories circulated that Tokyo Rose could be unnervingly accurate, naming units and even individual servicemen; though such stories have never been substantiated by documents such as scripts and recorded broadcasts, they have been reflected in popular books and films such as Flags of Our Fathers. Similar rumors surround the propaganda broadcasts of Lord Haw-Haw and Axis Sally... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Hook Mr. Hook is the title character of a series of predominantly black-and-white American animated cartoon shorts produced between 1943 and 1945 during World War II for the US Navy. The series ran for 4 shorts and was mainly produced by Leon Schlesinger Productions with the first by Walter Lantz Studios, Take Heed Mr. Tojo, being produced in full color. The character was designed by Hank Ketcham. Unlike the earlier Private Snafu series, which was created as an instructional film series, the Mr. Hook one was created exclusively as propaganda to encourage Navy personnel to purchase war bonds. The films include: - Take Heed Mr. Tojo - The Return of Mr. Hook - Tokyo Woes - The Good Egg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_bond War bonds are debt securities issued by a government for the purpose of financing military operations during times of war. War bonds generate capital for the government and make civilians feel involved in their national militaries. This system is also useful as a means of controlling inflation in such an overstimulated economy by removing money from circulation until hopefully after the war is concluded. At that point, the funds could be liquidated and serve as a stimulus to encourage consumer spending for the economy transitioning to peacetime activity. Exhortations to buy war bonds are often accompanied with appeals to patriotism and conscience. Government-issued war bonds tend to have a yield which is below market value and are often made available in a wide range of denominations to make them affordable to all citizens... By the summer of 1940, the victories of Nazi Germany against Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and France brought urgency to the government discreetly preparing for possible United States involvement in World War II. Of principal concern were issues surrounding war financing. Many of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's advisers favored a system of tax increases and enforced savings program as advocated by British economist John Maynard Keynes. In theory, this would permit increased spending while decreasing the risk of inflation. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr. however preferred a voluntary loan system and began planning a national defense bond program in the fall of 1940... Three new series of bond notes, Series E, F and G, would be introduced, of which Series E would be targeted at individuals as "defense bonds"... they were sold for as little as $18.75 and matured in ten years, at which time the United States government paid the bondholder $25 Large denominations of between $50 and $1000 were also made available, all of which, unlike the Liberty Bonds of the First World War, were non-negotiable bonds. For those that found it difficult to purchase an entire bond at once, 10 cent savings stamps could be purchased and collected in Treasury approved stamp albums until the recipient had accumulated enough stamps for a bond purchase. The name of the bonds was eventually changed to War Bonds after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, which resulted in the United States entering the war... Over the course of the war 85 million Americans purchased bonds totaling approximately $185.7 billion...

Beijing has launched military drills in the Taiwan Strait, “the first of their kind since 2016,” which it says are aimed at protecting China's sovereignty. Taiwan has slammed the move as "saber-rattling" and “intimidation.” The drills, which will last until midnight on Wednesday, aim to "safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity,"according to the director of Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office, Liu Jieyi. It comes after a separate exercise last week saw a Chinese naval flotilla, including the ‘Liaoning’ aircraft carrier, conduct a series of exercises in the South China Sea. Tommy Kelsey, a member of the Wake Forest School of Medicine Class of 2017, will serve as a lieutenant in the Navy after his graduation in May and will begin his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego. http://school.wakehealth.edu Find Us: Wake Forest School of Medicine 475 Vine Street Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education Winston-Salem, NC 27101 ------------------------------- - So, I've always wanted to be in the military in some way, and then once I figured out that I also wanted to be a doctor, the HPSP program, which is the Health Professions Scholarship Program, seemed like a good way to sort of merge the two. Between your first and second year of residency, you have the opportunity to do what's called a GMO tour. These are operational tours in which you act as a primary care physician for the forward Navy. - Wake Forest School of Medicine definitely approaches physician education from a holistic standpoint, developing great thinkers, great leaders, and people that are gonna be representative of our program. - No one in my immediate family has served in the military. Both my grandparents, however, did. One grandfather was in the Army and served in World War II. The other grandfather was in the Navy and served in the Korean War. I had the opportunity to restart the tradition of serving in our military and following after my two grandparents. I think the armed forces is at the forefront of medical technology and medical research. - Tommy was instrumental in several of our projects, doing research, looking at outcomes of patients, and he definitely has a bright future ahead of him.

Wide of both ships docked, Russian tanker "Ivan Bubnov" visible in the background STORYLINE A Russian naval task force arrived in Havana harbour on Saturday for a five-day visit led by Russia's Black Sea Fleet flagship missile cruiser, the "Moskva". Hundreds of people turned out along Havana's seafront road, the Malecon, to watch the ships come in. Young and old waved and cheered as the vessels pulled into port while being saluted by military cannons. "This is a good reception; it's great to receive them," said Valdomero Carroteguas, a 44-year-old Havana resident who came to see the event with his girlfriend. "We Cubans were for a long time allied to them, and we still are their allies." Accompanying the "Moskva" is the Northern Fleet's "Vice Admiral Kulakov" (a Udaloy-class destroyer), and a tanker christened "Ivan Bubnov". During their stay in Havana, the ships will be open for public viewing. The Russian crews are expected to participate in various cultural and sporting events. "We have always had Russian military visitors," said Emilio Nunez, a 58-year-old Cuban citizen who had received his college education in the Soviet Union. Under an ideological and economic alliance that has lasted for more than three decades, Cuba once received about 20 percent of its gross national product from Soviet subsidies. The island's economy almost collapsed in the '80s when the Soviets stopped sending aid. Cuba's economy has since become more self-sufficient, though it partly relies on its strong relations with Venezuela, its current top business partner. Cuba's relation with Russia had chilled after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, but it now seems to be gathering steam once again. The Caribbean island exports sugar to Russia as well as vaccines and other products from its advanced biotechnology industry. It is also interested in promoting exchange in the automotive, transportation, aviation and tourism industries. Reliance Naval Looking To Bid For Six Submarines Contracts Worth Rs 40,000 Crore. Billionaire Anil-Ambani on Tuesday said that Reliance group’s company Reliance Naval is looking to bid for six submarines contracts worth Rs 40,000 crore. He made the announcement at the Annual General Meeting of its parent company Reliance Infrastructure.Earlier known as Reliance Defence and Engineering Ltd (RDEL), the company was renamed to Reliance Naval to reflect its focus on naval shipbuilding as its principal segment. Anil Ambani’s led Reliance Infrastructure further plans to raise funds via rights issue to increase its stake in the company. RDEL (now, Reliance Naval), the erstwhile Pipavav Defence & Offshore Engineering, had reportedly got the bankers’ approval to exit a corporate debt restructuring exercise after reworking its loans worth over Rs 6,000 crore in April. Speaking at the AGM, Anil Ambani said that India’s 90% of defence needs are imported which cannot continue for long and that it will become an export hub to Airbus and Boeing on very sensitive aircraft parts. Reliance Naval is one of the two private sector shipyards qualified to build large programmes of Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. The firm already has the credit being the first private sector company to building a warship in its kitty. Earlier last year, RDEL (now, Reliance Naval) had got an approval from the Reserve Bank of India to exit the debt restructuring exercise upon refinancing its Rs 6,800 crore worth of loans with a longer maturity of 20 years and a reduced interest rate at 11%. The company’s exit from the debt rejig exercise comes after Reliance Infrastructure bought a 35% equity stake in Pipavav Defence & Offshore Engineering in December 2015 through an open offer, and reconstituted the board. At the AGM, Anil Ambani also said that the Reliance Infrastructure is in talks with Japanese companies for the bullet project. The company is also planning to launch Infrastructure Investment Trusts to raise Rs 2,500 crore in the road sector. arihant, indian navy, indian navy latest news, indian navy news, indian navy officer, indian navy strength, indian navy submarines, indian nuclear submarine, indian submarine news, indian submarines, make in india, navy news, nuclear submarine, scorpene class submarine, submarine, submarine news, the indian navy ====================================================================================================== DISCLAIMER: Each and every content used in this video is not imaginary. Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe China's growing military assertiveness has alarmed its neighbors and prompted the U.S to keep a high profile on Asian waters. Beijing has been pressing claims on disputed waters and seeking new weapons and warships. Liang Guanglie, the country's defence minister, said on Wednesday that China's booming economy is driving its military might. "In the next five years, our economy and society will develop faster, boosting comprehensive national power," Liang said, "We will take the opportunity and speed up modernisation of the military." Liang said China's military would continue to advance its capability to fight and win high-tech wars, while also boosting its conventional arsenal. He said the the 2.3-million-strong People's Liberation Army plans to do this all without foreign aid. "We will stand on our own feet to solve the problem and develop our equipment," Liange said, "The modernisation of the Chinese military cannot depend on others, and cannot be bought." China's increasing military expenditures has generated concern among its neighbours, but Chinese officials insist that they are only interested in peace and that its naval buildup is not a threat. The US, however, sees Beijing as a potential threat to its once unrivalled dominance of the Pacific. Liange has invited US Defence Secretary Robert Gates for talks in Beijing from January 9-12 amid a spike in tensions in Northeast Asia. Gates' visit to China will come a year after Beijing ended military relations with Washington in protest against a multi-billion-dollar US arms package for rival Taiwan. The two nations have since resumed low-level military contacts at a technical level. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao joined America's Seventh fleet aboard the The USS George Washington. Hundreds braved the rain to see the crew of the HMS Enterprise exercise the freedom of Tiverton this weekend. The Royal Navy vessel returned home to Plymouth after three years at sea on Tuesday, April 18, and her crew of more than 50 were joined by the Royal Marine Corps of Drums and members of Tiverton Sea Cadets in a parade through the town centre on Sunday, April 30. Starting at Tiverton Pannier Market, the crew paraded with the Queen’s Colour in full ceremonial uniform with swords and rifles fitted with bayonets. The Mayor of Tiverton, Councillor Steve Flaws also gave an inspection of the crew. HMS Enterprise has been affiliated with Tiverton for her whole life in service, beginning when she was commissioned in October 2003. A part of this affiliation was the granting of the freedom of the city by the town council. Cllr Flaws said: “What a great honour it is for me as mayor of Tiverton to welcome to our town the members of our adopted ship and the Royal Marine Band. “A couple of weeks ago, I actually had the pleasure of visiting the ship in Plymouth and sailing down to Falmouth. It was a fabulous day out and one that I will always remember. During this trip I learnt about the important work the Royal Navy does to protect our shores and its humanitarian work across the globe. Specifically, I discovered that over the last few years, HMS Enterprise has rescued many thousands of refugees and has probably saved many of those people from drowning. “I believe that we should all be proud of the work done by HMS Enterprise and I trust we will all continue to develop stronger links between the town and the ship. These wonderful events do not happen very often so I feel highly privileged that this has happened during my year as mayor.” Commanding Officer of the HMS Enterprise Philip Harper, who joined HMS Enterprise in November 2016 and has spent more than 25 years in the Royal Navy added: “I am humbled and honoured by the reception we have been given in Tiverton. My ship’s company have homes all over the UK and indeed as far afield as New Zealand and the US, but for the ship herself, Tiverton represents home – a home more fondly remembered for being visited so rarely. “We owe a great debt of gratitude to the citizens of our great country, who keep the home fires burning and allow us to protect the nation’s interests abroad, at range. And this beautiful county of Devon does more than its fair share – it is home to half of the Royal Navy and most of the Royal Marines. For hundreds of years, Devon has supplied the best sailors in the world including Drake and Raleigh, and good a good many serving today in Enterprise. “For today we thank the Mayor and the Town Council, and all those who have worked so hard to prepare. Most particularly we thank the people of Tiverton for their warm welcome and ongoing support. I’d also like to pay tribute to the Sea cadet Corps, led by Chief Petty Officer Mikki Chubb for all their good work with the young people of the town. “Thank you Tiverton, and please go on making this town, county and country a place well worth coming home to.”
